Process Art
At Bright Day Studio, we primarily focus on process art—which simply means the experience of creating is more important than the final product.
We aim to be a complement to what children are learning in school—a place where they can take the lead, follow their curiosity, and try things their way. In school settings, every child often has to complete the same project, step by step. At Bright Day, they can take an idea and run with it—tweaking, experimenting, and expressing their own vision.
When kids are given open-ended materials and the freedom to make their own choices—what to use, where to put things, how it should look—they're not just making art. They're building:
Confidence in their own ideas
Problem-solving and flexible thinking
Focus and patience
Creativity and risk-taking
There’s no “right way” or perfect result in process art—and that can sometimes be hard as a parent. You might expect their artwork to look a certain way or follow familiar norms (horses aren’t usually purple!).
But across the country, art teachers and studio owners are noticing a trend: by 1st grade, many kids start to lose confidence in their own ideas. They get frustrated if their artwork doesn’t match a sample exactly, or hesitate to start unless they’re shown “how to do it right.”
That’s why we believe giving kids permission to explore, experiment, and express themselves freely is so important.
So, any time you can give your kids CHOICE in what they make and how they make it, you are helping them develop skills that will help them in every area of their lives for years to come!
